The brief
Having completed the kitchen remodel for this client we were thrilled to be asked back to update the TV room. The brief was "Sophisticated Hotel, but keep it comfy!"
How we unlocked the scheme
The problem with this room is also what makes it fabulous. It's long and thin, with incredibly high vaulted ceilings and an enormous bay window, but it felt a bit unwelcoming. We set out to keep the glamour of the space while turning it into a cosy TV room.
Three elements combined to create a room the whole family want to hang out in.
First we ensured the 75 inch TV didn't feel lost on the 8m wall by building it into a textured ceramic panel. We balanced the look with an electric fire next to the TV. This helps the focus point of the room be big enough to hold the space, without the need for a cinema sized screen which the width of the room just couldn't take.
We filled the rest of the 8m span with textured wooden planks and fluted wood cabinets to add interest without clutter.
We added Tom Raffield pendants to bring the ceiling height down, and built in a window seat to include the bay window in the body of the room.
It's now big enough for a crowd to watch the football, but cosy enough for a quiet hour with a jigsaw.
Before renovation
Horizontal stripes make the wall feel even longer and the TV was lost
Awkward coving dissected the wall and heavy curtains felt overpowering
Moving the bed created space for a swing seat
Large print wallpaper made the WC feel small and dark
